Russia launches world's largest nuclear-powered icebreaker

On 25 May, the world’s largest nuclear-powered icebreaker was launched in a ceremony held in the shipyard in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The 173 metre-long Ural icebreaker is one of three vessels of Project 22220 that will be able to break through a three-meter-thick layer of ice. Ural and its sister ships Arktika and Sibir are powered by two RITM-200 reactors with a total thermal power of 350 MWt and electrical power of 120 MW. Each ship has two turbine-generators and three motors. By 2027, two more Project 22220 ships should be added to the Russian nuclear icebreaker fleet.
