With strong support from the European Parliament, the European Commission is trying to implement new rules for the security of gas supply. The solidarity principle will be applied for the first time when dealing with disruptions to the gas supply. Member states will have to help each other in the event of a serious crisis in order to ensure gas supply to households.
According to the European Commission Vice-President for the Energy Union, Maroš Šefčovič, the Commission focused mainly on solidarity, closer regional cooperation and greater transparency of gas contracts.
In the framework of closer regional cooperation, regional groups will jointly assess common security of supply risks, and develop and approve joint preventive and emergency measures. Natural gas companies will have to announce long-term contracts that are relevant for security of supply.
