Turkey and the EU are important energy partners, who must face the same strategic challenges and objectives. There is a very wide range of possible cooperation in areas that are of interest to both parties. Representatives of the European Union and Turkey have, therefore, met in Stuttgart to discuss the expansion of energy relations with Turkey. Previous round of negotiations took place on 9 February 2012 in Istanbul. Now, both sides agreed to focus on the following five topics:
- Long-term prospects for energy scenarios and energy mix;
- Market integration and development of infrastructure (gas, electricity, oil);
- Global and regional energy cooperation;
- Promotion of renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean energy technologies;
- Nuclear safety and radiation protection.
The EU and Turkey agreed to establish a group that will coordinate the joint work of expert teams. They also agreed on some activities that should begin immediately, especially focusing on gas, electricity, energy efficiency, renewables and nuclear energy.
